I want to repaint an old (FS98 = old) plane, but the texture files have name endings like .aaf, .0af, .1af and so on.

I was able to open and edit them, with DXTbtmp but not able to save them in the right format :'( certain

DXTbtmap limits what kind of files you can save them as.

Yep, I got that far as well but couldn't get the repainted versions back into their original format.

Those who have been around flight sims since the days of FS98 may know, was there some sort of conversion utility for the old files (.aaf) when the new system (.bmp) came out?

Try ConvR8. http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/programs/convr8.htm

Note the .xAF format is the same as R8. Simply use the appropriate file extension when saving the edited image. Depending on the version of FS/CFS this is for you can also use a BMP image by renaming the file with the appropriate .xAF file extension. It might need flipping/rotating to display properly as a BMP.

YES!!!!  ;D   Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I tried that but had no success.  I'm repainting a Martin Mars from FS98 to use in FS2004.  I can't do much about the design, I don't think anyone else has made a Mars, but at least I can tidy up the paint job and make it look more presentable.

Thanks again.

The matter is really simpler than you think. Check this out and you will all be surprised:

Well, I tried renaming the files but they still didn't want to open in any of my graphics packages.  No idea why.  Even Photoshop CS2 didn't like them!

However, using Convr8 I was able to open and save them as bmp files which I could then play with happily before converting them back.  So, one way or another, I can now repaint .aaf files.  Thanks everyone  ;D
