Hey All ,
Just a quick post , i'm kind of stuck trying to get my repaints look 3D , they look at the moment 2D because of no dirt!  I was wondering if anyone was willing to teach me OR if there is a tutorial on adding dirt to an aircraft to make it more real.   thanks.

To cover large areas as shown here, select an area and use gradient-fill from dark-grey (dirt) to base color on the Dirt Layer. For small smudges of dirt, just use an appropriate grey-colored brush (is all dirt grey?) on the Dirt Layer (these layers are see-through, Hybrid or Magnetic). Experiment.

It is pretty hard to get the right kind of look when you want a dirty/weathered looking texture set. I, personally haven't mastered it...but I want to! Gotta get a good mixture of blacks/greys/browns, depending on what sort of dirt you're looking for :P If you can get pics of a P-3 Orion, close to the engines, you'll probably get a good idea of what it should look like. I remember seeing them lined up at Fairford, with a very 'used' look to them, which I prefer. Anything else just looks like a plastic model kit to me  ::)

Thanks for the How to link. I use both FSRepaint and Photoshop7. Here's another weathered/dirt/dust/gunge (whatever) method using PS7 Patterns and Spraycan:

now that right there is what i call a Yooper plane. all it need is CHEVEROLET (or however it is spelled) on the tailgate lol and you cant for get the tirechains! ;D

Other added affects the door of a Cessna, the engine covers of a Pratt and Whitney, different tires on each wheel, rudder off a B-52 cut to fit and sealed with... what else Duck tape!

(YOOPER is the definition of someone born in the U.P. of Michigan, Upper Peninsula, U.P.er')

basically the redneck of the north

Lest too much information get lost in the shuffle . . . here's the Texture used to repaint the sample derelict repaint:

Image

Of course, any texture with any amount of dirt could be used. This DC3 sample repaint was painted in PhotoShop 7 using Multiply Layers, but any layer-capable paint program would do. Once an area is selected in PS7, right-clicking gives one the option to Fill with either color or Pattern. Smiple? You bet.

You can just type "Chevy" for short. And I can make the Chevy happen. Just look at the Aircraft Design forum and you'll see what I mean. ;D
