Crimbo Repaint

I've done a repaint of the SGA MD87 using their paintkit. Nothing fancy as its a first attempt.

Ive saved the files and loaded them into FS9 .... edited the Aircraft CFG and the model is showing up along with the original SGA Iberia MD87 ........ the only problem is that  my paintjob is only showing as GREY....

Any help would be most appreciated...

cheers

Basic things to look out for:

1. Are your textures in DXT3 (or original format) or are they 24-bit color (usually the default for paint programs)

2. Are the textures in the correct folder?

3. Have the textures been renamed?

just to emphasise a point made above.... 24BIT will NOT work in fs, DXT3 will, as will 32BIT

OK ......... I've saved them as DTX3 ........ with the original file names ......  In another folder... called the folder texture.1
Imported the files from the texture folder that wern't included in the paint kit.

Is there anything else I've missed?

It sounds too obvious but did you add the new Aircraft.cfg entry? If so, check it for errors. It's all too easy to make an elementary mistake.

PS. Oops. Silly me. I see you did add the CFG entry.
My other suggestion still stands. ;)

The CFG looks to be spot on. Try the textures as 32BIT and see what happens.

No worries :) With any aircraft, if the textures go grey, try 32bit, firstly the image is better quality, and 2ndly its more likely to work. I've seen it b4 and each time making textures 32bit has worked.

Happy to have helped

Only problem with 32 Bit is that they take longer to render :P

True, true, but its the cost of higher quality (or textures that actually show up)  ;) So i usually work in 32bit and accept the short time it takes to render the textures.

I don't do much repainting but I've never had a problem with DXT3 textures in FS2002 or FS9. I'm wondering if it depends on your video card, FS display settings or maybe the material/texture properties of the specific model. There must be an explanation. If in doubt it stands to reason that, if the original textures display properly on your system, saving edited textures in their original format should work.

PS. As an experiment I downloaded the Iberia MD-87 & the repaint kit. The original Iberia textures are in DXT3 format without Mips. I tried a simple repaint saving out in the same format with & without Mips. It displays fine for me in both formats (better with Mips if anything) so I suspect this depends on the video card. I also added Mips to the original DXT3 textures with the same result. I haven't tried 32-bit yet.

The problem with giving any advice/suggestions these days is the increasing number of variables. Everyone's system is different in some way & the graphics quality is affected by the OS, type/make of video card & FS display settings among other variables. The FS9.1 update complicates things even further. I'm using an antiquated Voodoo5 5500 video card on WinMe without the FS9.1 update installed. What works for me will not necessarily work or be ideal for others & vice versa. ;)

To be practical, you should only use 32 Bit on the exterior textures like the wings and fuselage. Using 32 Bit on landing gears and the VC is a waste of resources as you don't have any complex logo's and detail that could become blurred.
