Repainting gauges?

I'm doing a repaint of the default B747-400 in FS2002, and I was wondering if you can actually repaint the gauges for the Virtual Cockpit? I know a lot of the textures for the cockpit can be found in the 'texture' directory of the aircraft, but I've noticed there's certain bits of the gauges which are not in there. So I'm presuming these are contained in the Gauges directory instead? Unfortunately, these are not in BMP format, so I can't alter them directly. ???

Any help much appreciated!

Chuck Dome released a utility called GAU to BMP that extracts the bitmaps from gauges so that they can be repainted.

Backup your files before you try it though :)

And it works great. I've used it many times to change colours, add/remove mounting screws and stuff like that.

But you could have a problem with cab files though....

Having said that, if you click on the gauge cab file, you can extract all the files to a folder where it looks as though you can then view add edit them directly although I haven't tried it. This seems pretty straightforward to me. You would then, of course, have to put em back into cab format once you have changed the ones you wanted to. Again I don't think this is difficult if you have downloaded and installed the MS VB Runtime files because then you will have makecab.exe already installed and ready to rock and roll.

I think 7-zip can also unzip and compile Cab files.
