Why do some texture pictures look wierd?

I have started trying to repaint airsraft, but most of the pictures in the texture files are a bunch af innane vertical lines. Is this how it is supposed to be? And if so, how do you make such detailed repaints with a bar code?

P.S.
I am using paint shop pro 8.

Download DXTBmp & read the instructions. http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/programs/dxtbmp.htm

Also read through a few topics on this board.

Sorry Aspireingpilot. Take no notice. On reading my reply I realise I might have been a tad abrupt.

Welcome to SimV & please don't be afraid to ask if you get stuck. ;)

Just a comment to the newbies....
The reason some graphics look like "multicoloured barcodes" is that the original .bmp texture ex-PSP7 etc has been compressed using Martin Wright's great utility DXTBmp, this significantly reduces the texture size (in Mb) and allows faster uploads!!!.
