When I try to repaint an aircraft, it turns out gray instead of the color I want it to be.

Well, if you have FS2002 Pro, get out the Imagetool from the Gmax folder and open it. Open the original file you modified for your repaint and click on "Image" on the menu bar. Highlight "Format" and check which format the file is saved in. Now open up the repaint files and save them in the same format.
If you don't have FS2k2 Pro, someone else will have to tell you where to get it. Ozzy?

Imagetool also comes with the Scenery SDK (I believe), however a better program is DXTBMP.
I'm suspecting that sammy can already convert the original textures and the problem *could be*
1. repainted textures saved in 24-bit color.
2. changed texture names?
3. If the repainted textures went into a new folder, perhaps a missing reference in the aircraft.cfg file?

Try DXTBmp here.
http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/index.htmIt works with most graphics editors including M$ Paint.

When I tried it, yellow was black in the game.

Results might vary depending on the format you're using for the textures. Read DXTBmp Help for more information on FS texture formats. In most cases it's best to save out from DXTBmp in the format of the original textures. M$ Paint is not the best graphics editor but should be enough to get you started. All repainters have their own favourite methods & it's a matter of trial & error to find which suits you best. There are various repainting tutes posted here.
