Using my FSRepaint V2, I tried a repaint of a Carenado plane.

The Carenado base textures are saved as DTX3 BMP's, what program are you using to
     1. paint
     2. convert the textures
     3. what format are you saving as?

FS repaint is good for seeing what you have painted without having to load your FS everytime as long as the textures are BMP's, FS repaint won't show DDS format.

I use  Paintshop Pro or CS Photoshop to do the paints and convert the textures with Imagetool (which is a part of the FS SDK and a lot easier to use, in fsx the textures have to be flipped vertically and this program does it automatically).

What's your alpha channel colour? It happens to me when I forget to paint it.

Head over to here, there's a few tutorials.

But like your finding, it's a lot of trial and error, the easiest way I found it was to use a dedicated paint kit to practice with, find out how it's constructed layer wise, I've been uploading stuff now for nigh on 3 years and i'm still learning and asking.
