Raster and vector layers

Using Corel PSP X
Can some one explain the difference in a Raster and Vector layer. I read the help and it wasnt much help.

Also just curious if you guys change the name of your layers.

Everything you wanted to know about rasters and vectors but were afraid to ask because someone may tell you.

Yes, I use unique (descriptive) names on my PhotoShop  layers; after the first twenty-or-so layers, it makes it easier to keep track of them.
