Sharpening up textures.......

Postby cspyro21 » Fri Dec 16, 2005 2:39 am

Hi all,
I wanted to sharpen some textures on a reapint that I did for the Bell 206 (screenshots of repaint here)

How would I go about sharpening up these textures? I use Photoshop CS to paint, by the way.

Help much appreciated  ;)

A lot would depend on the size & format of the original textures. If this is a 16-bit Extended BMP format like DXT3 try saving it without Mips. There's an option for this in DXTBmp & some say it makes all the difference. This might depend on your video card & display settings. You could also try a different format like Extended 32-bit. Each time you edit a texture saved in a compressed format you will lose definition so it's best to work from a master copy & update from that if necessary.

How sharp is your bitmap in the first place?  Too sharp can give you jaggies, but too soft makes it looks fuzzy.  Compare your bitmap to the original MS texture, is there much difference in terms of clarity and detail?  If yours looks okay as a bitmap then the problem lies in the conversion from 24-bit to 32-bit, making your textures sharper won't solve the problem.  (It is a 24-bit file isn't it?)
