Repainting C130s/SAAF issues

Postby airpunk » Sun Nov 13, 2005 2:33 pm

hi there guys,

having had rather alot of time on my hands recently, and being an avid South African Air Force fan... i've devoted most of that time to getting some good SAAF textures together....

thus far i've managed to repaint a fictional F-15 scheme borrowing bits an pieces from other SAAF A/C that i have.

i am now working on the C-130s. the current scheme on the hercs is easy enough to do, its a simple overall grey. having downloaded one of Mike Stone's great C130s (and somewhat modified the CFG with the help of my father who flew Hercs) it was rather simple to adjust the minor details to bring it to a rather close copy of the new scheme. i am struggling however to get the numbers on the aircraft. i have gone further and made a copy of my original repaint and added the new SAAF insignia (i guess thats the right word)... also known as the "cookie cutter".

my next challenge is to do the older camoflage scheme from the 80s/90s... but i havent found any good pics that i can use as a referance. i do have some good books around the house which i can use... but i'm not sure how i'll manage to match up the lines of the camoflage on either side of the fuselage.

i have got the SAAF DC-3 repaint which i may use as a color guide. hmm..... any help would be much appreciated.. and perhaps with some guidance (and the hopeful installation of the ADSL line within the next week or so) i will release my attempts soon.

many thanks guys!

There are a couple of ways of matching up patterns.

one is plain trial and error, where you paint a bit on, then see how far out you are, move it, save, and keep going until its in the right place.

Or you can make a copy of the fuse, with both halves joined, and if you want the other side pasted above too. so it forms a 'net' of the aircraft. Then you can just paint on the cammo, then cut and paste the cammo back into the right places on the real textures.

If you need ay more help, or that dosnt make sence then post back or pm me etc..

Google for  Graham+King+military+repaint -- he's the king of the military repaints. There doesn't seem to be any of Graham's here at SimV but search anyway.
