I think the "weapon of choice" is GMAX. It's free from Turbo Squid.

"Registry key cracker"? As a rule, Simviation doesn't condone "cracking", and GMAX is freeware, and the activation code is provided at no cost when you register and activate it (IIRC). No "cracking" needed.

If you mean a .mdl file that FS2004 uses you can't open them, you would need to get the source file from the creator.

To register gmax you only need to follow the link it shows on the key insertion window.
You cannot retrieve a model from an mdl file, with the exception of FSX mdl to blender, in which case you lose all the animations and other FS features.
You have to have the original source file, no matter if the change is small or big.
