Something Difficult This Way Comes

Postby machineman9 » Thu Feb 16, 2012 3:17 pm

I was nearly a decade late to the phenomena which is Firefly (and its movie couterpart, Serenity)

It has a huge allegiance - not to be confused with the alliance - of people, who have devoted months and years to create fan work, 3D models, props, replicas, etc.

I'm working through a tutorial by Rigel and Treybor of the Foundation3D 'Lightwave' forum. The specific tutorial that I am following can be found Here

Problems? Well, I'm producing this thing in Blender, which I have no experience of using (but I'm working through the tutorials and it is an enjoyable experience). I was able to rig up my second monitor and use it as a second camera in Blender, so now I can view two perspectives at the same time to check that everything looks good 'n proper. I would highly recommend other designers to do the same if they haven't already!

So here's a very quick snapshot - A couple of hours in, but then again this is purely from scratch with the software, and I have been working through tutorials.

I did have a Grob Tutor project, but that has effectively been cancelled. I felt limited by the software that I was using, but Blender has given me a few more options... So I may restart that project.

I don't expect this model to ever make it into Flight Simulator, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the tutorial took over a year to produce, and I have no training in this software. Also, I have no idea how to make FS working aircraft, and thirdly, the model will probably be too massive for FS to handle. I would like to produce a highly detailed cross-section of this aircraft though, and I have a few ideas which I will take to university to pursue.

So more of a fun project, and it is a lot of fun so far. Let me know what you think. I know that this project is currently just a simple lathe, but it has taken a good long while to get right

End of day 1:

The main reactor is about one sixth complete... I'd like to get it finished by next weekend. For some reason, textures aren't showing up in the viewport that I'm using on Blender... And I really cannot tell why. It shows up on other viewports if I use multiple stacks or monitors. Weird.

Thank you  :)

I believe there is a Serenity model out there somewhere (FS2000/2004) and there is an elusive FSX version somewhere too, but I have had no luck in finding it.

I think X-plane has a very detailed model too.
