I want to start modeling aircraft; suggestions?

Postby brantmacga » Thu Apr 02, 2009 12:33 pm

I finally would like to get into modeling aircraft.

I have gmax. Should I stick with that and get some books on how to use it all the way, or would I be better off with FSDS?

What might be some pro's and con's of each program?

Thanks,

The simplest explanation I can think of:

FSDS is a fairly easy program to learn, but falls behind in complex functions.  Gmax has those in spades, but the downside is that it takes months and months to become even slightly proficient at using it.  Basically, if you have a large amount of patience to spare, and don't care how long you have to practice to get things right, go with Gmax.  Otherwise, you're probably better off using FSDS.

I would suggest using gMax from the start.

I have to say that I do agree with Kevin on this.  I was trying to give you the overall choice, but when you get right down to it, you'll end up paying more money for a softer program with FSDS.

The Gmax bible is good, but there is a lot of reference to stuff that you won't ever need unless you start modeling for things like Quake: bones, IK links, etc.  Nearly everything you need to know about using Gmax with FS you can find out here or at Free Flight Design Shop, which is a great site for hard technical questions.  FFDS also has a forum which is dedicated to tutorials, which will teach you everything you really need to know.
