What kind of file are .m3d files? What will open them up? Is it possible to convert other MS sim files from CFS2 or FS2 to .M3D files or vice versa?

Compiled files - mdl format not deciphered.

Nothing, short of a hex editor

No.

M3D files for CFS3 are created by the gmax plugin/converter that comes with the CFS3 gamepack.  There is no conversion from the MDL format to the MD3.
