Hey there, Woody!

The way I would do it would be to create several different cones of "flame" in Gmax at the exhaust ports.  Label them as prop0_slow01, prop0_slow02, etc.  Then make copies and label them as prop0_blurred01, prop0_blurred02, etc.  That way, they only show up when the engine is running, and they will also spin.  You could make them jagged at the ends, so that when they spin they look as though they are flames firing.

For FS9:
There is a package on avsim that does the job for the dc-3
Almost all calclassic propliners have optional exhaust flames (look at that site)

And for FSX
Again on avsim a package for the DC-3

If you go download the Henschel Hs P75 Heavy Fighter from http://www.simviation.com/fs2002vintage6.htm, it has the Gmax source file with it, which is where I got the idea.  First try flying it in FS9 (might not work in FSX) and look closely at the engine exhaust pipes.  Then check them out in the Gmax file.  You'll see what I mean.
