I'm already having trouble with one of the most basic tasks in Gmax... ;D

I can't seem to set up the 3 view bitmaps correctly. Well, I can, but then when I try to use them, they just squash/distort, and pixelate.

As seen here:

This happens when I zoom in/out (although the pixelation is always there), and to put it back to normal, I have to keep updating the bitmap.

Now I'm just trying to get to grips with the program, so I should probably choose something a little simpler than a Lansen! Nevertheless, until I get this problem sorted, I won't be doing anything.

So is there a way to stop the bitmaps distorting, and is it possible to have an image that isn't pixelated?

Cheers.

Could only suggest following these inputs on the view port options, you might find a setting which is not set right.

I think I managed to sort it out, in that the bitmaps were different sizes, and it was trying to match the sizes of the other bitmaps.

The problem then, was that I couldn't set up the scale properly, as for the COG to be in the centre of the bitmap, I had to leave gaps between the aircraft and the edge of image on at least three sides of every bitmap, not allowing me to use the method shown here.

With a bit of trial and error, I got it to work, but the Lansenleft bitmap was then the wrong scale compared to the rest of them.

THEN when I opened it up next time, all the backgrounds had disappeared, and when I tried refreshing the background, ALL of the bitmaps were off scale! >:(

Damn! ;D

Does there happen to be a better way of setting up scaled background images in Gmax? Perhaps 50 pixels is equal to 1 metre, for example?

(I did start a crude nose cone, just to get the hang of it, but it was when I went back that none of the backgrounds were set up as they were before, so I have done a bit of modelling.)

You might want to try using Katahu's method:

Find the exact dimensions of the image you are using for one of the backgrounds.  In Gmax, create a "plane", making sure it has only two polygons, and make it the same dimensions as the image (500 x 300 becomes 500 ft and 300 ft).

Now press M to open the Gmax material editor.  Click "New", "Standard" and then "Apply" with the new plane selected.

Now scroll down to "Maps" in the editor window.  In the space next to "Difuse Color" click on "None" then doubleclick "Bitmap".  Now navigate to where you stored the image and doubleclick on it.

The image SHOULD show up on the plane at this point.  If it doesn't, click on the little blue and white Rubick's cube underneath the "Apply" button.  Now make sure it looks right.  If it looks squashed, reverse the dimensions of the plane.

Now that it is set up correctly, you can simply use "Select and Uniform Scale" to get it to the correct size.

Do this with the other 2 views and then set them up so you can see them in the correct views.

Here is an old tutorial that should work.  A bit hard to read but you will get the jist of it.

Aha, I'll have to try that when I get back to it.

For now, however, I'm working on an A-7E profile!
