I am requesting the assistance of GMAX enabled designers. I have been working on an FS9 P-39 and have come to a near stand still.

I need the assistance of "co"-designers, Please leave an email address if you are interested.

Since I'm the kind of modeler who is typically "grounded" all I can do is give you some advice.

If I were you, it would better to make the wings out of a single cylinder. You take a cylinder, put it on its side and flatten it a bit to give it an airfoil-like shape. Then convert the cylinder to an editable poly, mesh or whatever you choose and move the vertices that are lined up to finish the airfoil. From there, you can use the slice the tool to make cross sections of the wing so that you uniform scale a cross section to fit the general shape of the wing. Viola!

But that's only the easy part. Wait till you start making wheel wells and stuff like that.

Jesse: your technique for modelling a wing is something I have used several times in the past, with little success.  There is just no way to keep a uniform and smooth curve to a wing once you start moving individual vertices.

So I tend to take that same cylinder and then use the taper modifier to get a teardrop shape.  Then detach one half of the cylinder (in the "face" modification mode) and reduce its width by about 50%.  This gives you that unique form so common in airfoils (shallow below and a nice hump on top).  It also reduces the amount of inconsistencies later on down the road when building the gear housing.

Falcon: do not get discouraged when making your first model.  The key is perserverance.  Travel around the web, looking at every gmax-related site that's out there.  A good one is the FFDS Forums.  They are incredible modellers, and its the "home" of such greats as Milton Shupe and Rob Barendregt.  At least, they post there a lot . . .  The forum is also a YaBB type like SimV, so it will be easy for you to understand and find what you need.  I've found more help on specific issues there than almost anywhere on the web.

Hey Falcon. Check out the flag on this aircraft. This is my first model. I used the extrude method to create the wings. Building the right half of the model first extruding and pulling vertices it can be done. Although it is probably more time consuming. Unfortunatly I'm busy getting this aircraft flight worthy so I'm unable to help at this time. Greg

I liken FS aircraft design to digging that tunnel through the snow from your front door to your neighbors after the third blizzard in October  :o

You know it can be done.. it's probably fun.. people will be amazed..  you take it step-by-step, slowly correcting your mistakes so the tunnel won't collapse. The last fourth of the tunnel is WAY better than the first fourth and the middle barely resembles a tunnel at all. By the time you master the challenge of the day, your pastie is too cold to enjoy.. AND you find that blizzard number four has snowed over your entrance and you end up tunneling bacwards. Just before the spring thaw (late May).. you FINISH.. only to find that your neighbor decided to tunnel to his garage and is in town enjoying hot chocolate.

Next winter's tunnel will be much better..  lol
