Texture making troubles

Hi everyone, I have been building a very detailed NCC Enterprise 1701 from star trec fame. The trouble I have been having is when I add textures to the parts, like the color of white off another existing texture, it shows up as the whole texture of the original that I was using to get the white off of. How do I make the same type of texture files that I see in all the great aircraft that I see on this site? I not only see the colors but the parts of the aircraft that they go to and I cant seem to make this happen.  Oh yeah, I guess I should tell you that I am using FSDS v3 and new to it.  Thanks guys

Am I wording this wrong? Is that why so many are reading it but no answers yet? If so, tell me .

Yeah.  The wording is totally incomprehensible, at least to me.  I don't use FSDS, but the problem might be a universal modelling-type thing.  If it is, we can help you.

If you're seeing the complete texture, instead of just the desired part,. it may be trhat you're not assigning the coordinates correctly.

For example, say you're texturing the top part of the disc on NCC 1701, and assigning the texture that already contains, say, the top and bottom.  You cannot just assign the complete texture to the top of the disc, because then you'll have both images weirdly displayed.  You need to adjust the coordinates in the texture assignment dialog to "fit" the part.

I don't know FSDS either, so I'm stumped. However, I can provide a ton of help when it comes to Gmax.
