Taboo?

Postby Formula_1 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 8:45 pm

Hi all

Is this considered improper?
Downloading a freeware model  from this site (or any other freeware site). Load that model into gmax and study it?
I do not mean use any part of it. Only to study how it was created, etc?
Can a freeware model be changed, such as more detailed VC, etc? Only for practice, of course.

I understand no one should use anything from someone else's work and claim it as their own. That is certainly a no-no. So I would never try to offer any piece of someone else's work. My concerns have nothing to do with releasing of another's works, modified or not. Unless the designer allows it.

I believe it would be helpful to see a complete model in gmax and to be able to look at it's design closely.

I am only interested in using a model to help me learn from. I just don't know how the community feels about doing such.

Well, for starters, there's not a snowball's chance in hell that anyone would even have the resources to edit a compiled *.mdl file. And I'm serious. Because a *.mdl file is compiled and completely hard-coded when put together by either Gmax or FSDS or any other 3D program, no one can open it.

And I mean 'absolutely no one'. You'll have to ask the author for the source file of the model [eith a Gmax or FSDS source file] and edit it from there. However, that's IF the author in question even agrees to lend you A source file.

Ok thanks

I had not tried, I was playing around with the tutorials and thought;

I wanted to ask first. I hope to get into the add-on scene sometime, so I wanted to make sure I followed proper etiquette ;)

It is good to know they are so well protected.

On the other hand, all is not lost.  Some of the finer gmax models (eg. Milton's excellent offerings, for example) are available to download, study and modify.

Simviation offers a bunch of "orphan" source files ready for some willing soul to adopt and finish.

Welcome to the madness...

Hi Formula-1,

You can also get the source code for George Carty's Gmax 707 on Avsim, if you want to study how a big plane model is put together.

;)

Hi
Thanks.
I am interested in everything right now, lol.
Actually a big complex plane is something that must hold many areas of valuable information. I'm sure it is way over my head at this point, but I imagine I will pick up some good clues about things from one. I will give it a look this weekend.
