I am almost positive this question has been asked on here before, but for the life of me, couldn't find it doing searches.
So, does anyone have any tools/tips/tricks to doing this? A plugin would be really nice . . .

In .3dsmax you would export as .3DS, then when in Gmax you Import that as a .3DS file.

Okay, wait. Let me rephrase that:
I have downloaded a few files from the net in *.max form, but am unable to figure out how to import them into Gmax. Does that make any difference? I suppose I could just email the original authors and ask for assistance, but I would much rather not bother them for something trivial if I can solve it myself with a simple download.
Gracias, and all that . . .

You CAN NOT import a *.max file into gMax. You MUST first export the *.max file from 3dsMax as a *.3ds file. Then you can import the *.3ds file into gMax. If you do not have 3dsMax, your kinda SOL, but maybe you can get someone that has the version that the *.max file was made in (or higher) of 3dsMax that will do the exporting to a *.3ds file for you.

Guess, im talking in 3d culture talk or something, basically you will have your file for 3ds. Then, you would export file as .3DS file in 3ds, then open G-max and import your file as .3DS it should load asking if you want to merge etec. (it will work), hope this makes sense, what you are trying to achieve is available just read carefully what I and Firestriker noted.
