FS9 MDL File

I am new to this forum, so forgive me if this has been asked already...I did a search and did not find the answer...here goes...

I am making a piece of scenery and want a couple of 'wrecked' or 'taken apart' planes.   I was hoping to take the default cessna and cub models, disfigure them somewhat (bent wing, crinkle prop and nose) and place them back into fs9 in a scenery file.
I cannot however open an MDL file in either GMax, or 3DS (the tools I have).

Is this possible? or is a some type of copyright violation to do this...

Thanks,
greg

Nope.  You cannot decompile an MDL file.

Yes, plus you'll incur the ire and ill will of your fellow flightsimmers.

Now, having said that, and since you want bits and pieces for scenery purposes, you can take an available source file, port them into gmax/3DS, commit horrible acts upon them and regenerate the scenery file.

I'm thinking that you don't need a highly detailed model anyway, so an older model will give you the overall shapes that you would need.  You'd have to retexture them, of course, but that should be easy..

Eeks!

I would certainly not want to suffer any wrath!  ;D

When you say 'take an available source file, port them into gmax/3DS' what source file are you referring to?

I really do not need all that much detail, since I am going to crumple it anyway...

Thanks!
greg
