As of Thursday, discreet has decided to stop offering Gmax as a stand-alone product. Nearest thing is now 3ds Max. Also, discreet has bought out competitor Maya...

This is really old news.

For almost a year (well, maybe since the beginning of this year at least), discreet had sent over to TurboSquid all support and downloads.

HOWEVER - all this means is that gmax will not be "updated".

gmax is a modelling program.  By itself it does nothing.

For the flightsimmer, it remains a powerful modelling program.

It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will develop a gmax converter that will work for future FS versions.

gmax' viablity (or any "low end" modelling program's) to work with Fligth Simulator depends on the direction Microsoft takes.

Gmax is a good program for game design, but that seems to be its limitation.  I am currently (when I have the time) attempting to create a short movie sequence using the prog, but I don't know if it will work, or if it will even be worth the effort.

And it's official:

From the TurboSquid forums

Gmax End of Life announcement
Oct 13, 2005  9:54:27 AM

Dear Gmax users,
I am here today to inform you that Autodesk has officially decided to end its support for the Gmax product and that their company has stopped support for it effective October 6th.

Since Turbo Squid is a valuable partner for Autodesk and we've been managing the product and community on their behalf for the past year, they've allowed us to continue to offer the Gmax download until November 1st so that we can effectively manage the transition for this now defunct product. At that point, the ability to download Gmax from our site will be removed as will the ability for users to get authorization codes for the product.

These forums will continue to operate for the community for a small period of time beyond that date, and we'll be happy to try and assist the community during that time.

Respectfully,

-=Beau

All is not lost - if you have gmax, great.  It is still "the" modelling program for FS2004.

The only question is,. again, what will Microsoft do for the future?

Sounds to me as though another "rework" is in progress, like what they did with CFS3.

May their bums fall off from jungle rot, if that's true . . . ::)

Just remember, in this case your anger is misdirected - Microsoft has nothing to do with gmax - this is a discreet/Autodesk product.

Microsoft got caught, along with other gamepack developers, in a pinch.
