Gmax is free but it's a steep learning curve.
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=5562445&siteID=123112Unless you have 3D modelling experience I think repainting an existing aircraft would be the best way to go. This can be done with any graphics editing program. You will find DXTBmp essential for converting the texture formats.
http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/Once you get used to that try creating panels or modifying another part of the aircraft. You will get a lot of useful practical experience along the way & this is all part of creating a model these days.
