Where to go from here...

Postby Wing Nut » Mon Aug 29, 2005 2:13 pm

Well, once again, here's a point where I have no idea how to proceed.  Can someone point me in the right direction for making this windscreen and the borders around the cockpit?  It's kind of wierd.  I could make the trim out of cylinders or boxes I guess, but from what I've seen, there must be a better way to do this...

Wrap a plane around the countor from the front and then then goto a side veiw then shape the curve on the sides. for the border use a very narrow box just wide enought ot go throught your plane, make shure the box is the same number of steps as the plane. Good Luck ;)

Me, I prefer using a cylinder for that. Create a simple cylinder, add in the segments [as needed], lay the object on its side to match the image, convert to an editable poly, delete the two ends and bottom-half of the object. From there, move the vertices to the desired locations so as to achieve a contour effect.

Just my idea.

Yours truly would have formed the windshield as part of the fuselage then rammed a shaped box/cylinder in a boolean cut......

As it is, you might want to try to extrude the edges of the front coaming to form the windshield shape, then refine (add points) to continue refining the lower edges to form the curve.

If you could upload a perspective view of your fuselage/cockpit.. prefereble shaded with "edged faces" turned on (to see where you vertex are located). I think I could make a short example/tutorial for you.
The best and most elegant solution (there are at least 10) is probabely further editing the fuselage with extrude, chamfer
weld, create etw.. to add the further parts.
But I need to see your geometry first so I can make a little example.

cheers

Sam - look at the 'trouble in Mudville" thread for a quick view of the wireframe/solid.

It seems he deleted the "cockpit" polygons, and that they form the one section.  One possible way,if he doesn't have a "covered" backup, would be to recreate the polygons, detach and then form the windshield with an added slice and boolean...

I do.  I'm just taking some screeinies now.  I don't take a dump without backing up first...  :)

Felix, can you expound a bit on what you wrote earlier?

Here we go.  And to think I chose this plane because it was a nice simple one...  ::)

Here's what I have been messing around with, until I can get this sorted out.  I'm sure it'll change once I figur out what I'm doing with it.  I made a cylinder and cut out the cockpit opening.  After that, I made the frame around the glass portion then separated the part that fills in the fuselage.  I know that one is going to have to change.   At one point I had the trim going all the way around the windscreen, but it just looked like crap...

ok.. I made a little videotutorial, how to roughly
model the inside of the cockpit and the windshield
using boxmodeling techniques.
You can download it here.

Thanks, Sam!  I'm downloading it now.  I'm about to rip what little hair I have left out on this thing...  ::)
