On an a/c that I'm building, I want to add smoke effects. But I want the smoke to be delayed until hatches open to release the smoke.

If you map the hatches to something like a wingfold or tailhook command, you should be able to write a simple XML gauge file that will start a smoke effect when the hatches open.
