Problem

Let me break it down for you:

1) I use gmax
2) I have created my model which works in Flight simulator
3) I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0
4) I have no textures for my aircraft
5) Where do I go from here to texture my aircraft and get textures which you would normally find in c:/program files/Microsoft Games/FS9/Aircraft/c172/.... (you know, like texture.1, texture.2 etc.

Please help me on this one! I have been stuck on this for sooooooo long! (several months)

Also, if possible I would prefer to only use gmax and photoshop 7.0 to create the texture templates, without the need to spend another $150 like what I spent on photoshop...

Hi Kobye.

I hope that those more knowedgeable than me will chip in here, but I think that what I'd do would be to map a .bmp file to your model while still in GMAX, before you export it (sorry, I can't remember the command off the top of my head). Perhaps you could use one of the default .bmp files from one of the M$ aircraft as practice to get the feel of it.

Once you've got the .bmp in the right place on the model in GMAX, then export it. Make sure that you've got the appropriate .bmp file in your 'texture' folder. All things being equal, the texture shold then show up on your model in the location and orientation that you used in GMAX.

Hope this makes sense - comments anyone?

:)

Uhh... Okay let me put it this way!
You are talking to someone who has NO experience whatsoever with "mapping" and stuff.  ;)

All I know what to do is design my aircraft, have it working i.e. retractable gear, flaps etc. That's where I am. But then to texture it....

But is texturing that amazingly hard? Because on the waikato carrier, but especially the freeware arrcab carriers there is a lot of texturing into little corners etc. I thought: If they can texture those static hornets, then I should well be able to texture my plane?  :)

I hope I get even more help but thanks for the effort microlight! Come on guys, mor enthusiasm!  ;)

The gmax tutorials give you the basics of texture mapping (which, in a very oversimplified way) is taking a snapshot of the part that will let you paint it, and then properly assign it to the part).

There are a number of good tutorials at:

Freeflight Design Shop  (Click on the tutorials section)

and

FS Alphs Tutorials

Thanks Felix!

Don't give up, criticz64 - I only did some texturing in GMAX just the once when I went through the model process to learn the GMAX basics (which I then promptly forgot!). But it included mapping textures to parts, so it can't be that difficult. Go with the tutorials - I'm sure you'll be texturing in no time flat.

99.9% of the time it doesn't work because the way YOU model the part, may not be the same as someone else..
