GMAX to FS2002PRO?

Postby OmegaFlyer » Mon Oct 25, 2004 7:33 pm

Hello, I just signed up for these forums!

I have a full install of FS2002 Professional and a downloaded copy of Gmax. I made a simple model with it, and I would like to know how you convert the model into a .MDL file. I also have a copy of MakeMDL but I cant seem to get it to work; it only accepts .X files ???
Please help!

Thanks,

Hi Omega,

You will need to copy the MakeModelExp.dll to the gmax plugins folder to start with. I can't remember the exact path to the plugin offhand. Do a search on the gmax folder in the FS root dir. *.dll as the search criteria should be good enough to locate it. Also go and get the latest MakeMDL.exe from the MakeMDL SDK and install it in the gmax plugins folder as well. Once you've done that configure gmax to use Meters. Go Customize=>Preferences. Open the General tab and look in the System Units Scale section, change from Inches to Meters in the dropdown menu. That should get you going for now.

This is odd...the file MakeModelExp.dll doesn't exist on my entire computer!  ???

I already have MakeMDL.exe in my gmax>plugins folder in the FS2002 directory, and I switched from inches to meters in gmax...but I wonder why the file doesn't exist?

FSModelExp.DLE is the plugin you should look for.  That and makemdl.exe are required.  Both should have come with FS2002 Pro edition but a full install may be required for it to show up in your search.  They will be on the CD set somewhere.

If you are exporting for FS2002, the new, latest Makemdl will not work.  Use the 1.0 or 1.1 version.

Heheheh, thanks Ender.  :)

Yep, I have those two files that Milton mentioned in the plugins folder. I also verified that the MakemDL version is 1.0. What do I do next?

In Gmax, go to FILE --> Export.

It only allows me to export it as a P3D file. Is this what it should be, or should it be something else?

Have you tried restarting Gmax since you put those things where they go?  And are you sure they're in the "plugins" folder, and not something else?

Cheers, Stratobat! ;)

There are several plugin folders in gmax.  Ensure your gmax path statement is pointing to the one with the makemdl in it.  Otherwise, stick those programs in the default gmax plugin folder.

LOL, I guess not since I told you the wrong file name. Don't know what I was thinking at the time. Sorry about that.

As Milton has mentioned place all the files here C:\gmax\plugins

C-R-A-Y-O-L-A, and try to stay within the lines...

Don't mind Felix,

He uses the big box I'm told. That must be because it has more colors to choose from. You forgot to mention the Big Chief Tablet.  ;D

I do feel for him...It must be hard to do this kind of work after having his knuckles repeatedly whacked back in grade school.
