Bending a cylinder

Hi all,
What is the best way to put a couple of sharp bends in  a cylinder and still keep the cylinder symmetrical .
I am using gmax to make an  aircraft control stick. I have tried a couple of ways But the cylinder starts to flatten out when I start to bend the cylinder to much.

cheers

Rhys

When you say sharp bend, are you talking 90 degrees or sharper?

Hi FSEdge,
I want to put  a 90 degree bend on the cylinder and know the best way to also do sharper bends

I'm an extreme newbie when it comes to Gmax, but have you tried the Bend Modifier and the Select & Rotate tools?

Hi Stratobat,
I have tried the bend modifier but when I selected the part of the cylinder I wanted to bend, if I bent it to far it would lose its symmetrical shape and start to flatten out. It also did the same thing when I went to select.

cheers

If you want to go for the sharp Right Angle 90-degree bend, select the polygons where you want the bend to occur. Use the Slice tool set on a 45-degree angle and slice. Detach half of the cylinder to element and rotate as needed to align the two halves back again and weld the vertices.

If you want a 90-degree elbow use the Bend modifier. The image above show a bend set to 90 degrees on all of the green objects. The numbers of segments will determine how well the bend is produced.

If you really take the time to come at a problem from all the angles (no pun intended)..  for freeware, Gmax is an incredibly powerful design tool. I can't get bored with it. And like this thread... sharing and learning tricks and techniques is half the fun.
