It seems a lot of people keep coming in here and suggesting they want to start a design group for FS, yet they know nothing about aircraft design.  Everyone wants to coordinate, but have little else to offer the group by way of productivity.  To be perfectly honest, if you are new or are inexpereienced with aircraft design, you have no business telling other people what to do on a project.

Instead of form production groups, why not get together and form learning groups?  E-mail others you see here that are also just starting out.  Get chummy with them.  Compare the pitfalls you have come across while trying to pick up Gmax or FSDS.  I think if you try things this way, you'll learn a lot quicker than telling those experienced guys (I am not one) what to do.

I agree on the points whereby an inexperienced person shouldn't tell somebody what to do on their models (Life how to create the fuselage), but if you happen to know an aircraft personally (You piloted the thing), then why not point out some pitfalls in the design, not to embarress the designer, but instead to make him, or her, aware that they are leaving out some details.

Might be a good idea to do this through a PM though

You do have a point: feedback from a real pilot of the model is always useful.  The key, as I've been told, is "praise in public, criticise in private".   Most modellers want to make their creations as accurate as possible, so constructive criticism, presented properly, is more than welcome.

I'm not saying don't give feedback.

In the past, "learning" meetings have been proposed.

A regular meeting is awkward, but one-on-one net meetings have proved useful.

There ARE folks out there that are willing to help - given willing participants.

On the contrary - part of the purpose of a co-pilot is to correct a captain if & when he does overlook things, etc  - part of trying to minimise the human error aspect of flight.

Several crashes have indeed been blamed on pilot ego. It would be a foolish & short sighted captain indeed who would let any ego get in the way of safetly. A short careered one too!  :D

i think this is a great idea and agree totaly on the leader chipping in and actualy knowing something about the design instead of just setting up a group

this kinda gives me an idea to make a website devoted to aircraft and scenery design..not downloads but tutorials...popular problems associated with creating an aircraft /scenery and how to resolve them...if you think its a good idea i may go ahead with it but would need lots of input from the designers who are overcoming problems and for them to share their experiences to help others. reckon with time it could become a very useful site crammed with information and a useful resouce tool for both new and experienced designers.

Ahem.  It's been done - and it's called "Freeflight Design Shop", since 1998 it has been devoted to flightsim modelling, with tutorials, tips, and source files.  It was the "original" flightsim modelling forum.

From FFDS, we link to, or host, some of the best flightsim  modelling tutorials.

The only downloads we have are tutorials, and aircraft model source files, donated by some of the gifted builders.

For scenery, you can't do too much better than scenery.org, and of course, the scenery design forum here at Simviation.
