Seems to me this forum is one of the best sources for access to tutorials, tools, expertise, etc.

If its not here, there are links to it if it exists.  Otherwise, there are plenty of experienced modelers here to help.  That's what its all about, isn't it?  :-)

My problem with the Stupid Idiot's Guide is best summed up by this sentence on one of the opening pages:

I'm going to assume you have some familiarity with designing...

That doesn't help the true novice, and is the main reason I've been unable to build a single aircraft.

Someone should pen something for the Day One beginner.

I'll try to get something going after school is out for the summer in a couple of weeks and if no one else picks up on this. Right now things are kind of tied up.

While I will let the judgement of others decide about whether they are "really good websites", some are:

Simviation.com - and the design utilities page, orphan source files page, and this design forum.

Freeflight Design Shop - tutorials, links to tutorials, source files, and and absolutely magnificent design forum (the fact that I host it doesn't affect my opinion in any way, of course)  (http://www.freeflightdesign.com)

gmaxsupport.com - the forums there support gmax, including making airplanes for FS as wells as learning/using gmax.

My recommended approach to gmax is:

Do the tutorials that come with gmax to learn the basics of the program,

then

go to the websites for gmax/flightsim specific tutorials.

Frequent these forums to ask specific questions.

Somewhere along the line, download the FS9 SDKs from the Microsoft site (see my signature), and install, as appropriate, per the instructions.

Thou shalt read and commit to memory such utterings as come from "Milton" and "Firestriker", to name but two sages of the gWax persuasion.  Anything uttered, however, in the name of "Inspector Poly" shall be cosnidered with a grain (or more) of salt.

Ryan, I would suggest listening to Mr. Felix and then going to check out the FFDS page and forum.  He's forgotten more about making a plane than most of us will ever know.  And what he doesn't know, he has some arcane method of finding out that we will never understand.   :D
