how do i adjust the smoke for my engine to be lower
which one of the following set of numbers do i change
i am mainly concerned with the white smoke

[SMOKESYSTEM]
smoke.0=0.00,-6.70, -12.40, fx_smoke_b
smoke.1=0.8,-15.70, 0.00, fx_smoke_w

the last number in the group usually refers to the vertical position .

One of the 'features' of FS is that the positions in the smokesystem section are not in the same order as for the others e.g. engine location.

The first figure in the smokesystem section is the vertical, the second is horizontal, the last is lateral. Another feature (as you've seen in a file I've sent you already) is that in FS2k2 (don't know about FS9) changing the vertical position modifier doesn't actually do anything - you have to modify the vertical (Y offset) parameter in the effects file itself. This is why each plane tends to have its own dedicated smokesystem file.

how would you go about setting up a smoke system for a deignated plane in the manner you described

excuse my spelling i stay up to late and this is the result

1) decide which fx file you want to use for the effect
2) make a copy in your effects folder and rename it to dedicate it to your plane
3) use the [smokesysem] entry in aircraft.cfg to locate the horizontal and lateral positions (use the engine locations as a guide)
4) edit the fx file in Notepad, changing the Y offset value in the [emitterX] section.

Once you do all this, the smoke will come out of the right place.
