HI Woody,
In Gmax:
1.  Be sure that the UVW maps are square.
2.  In gmax you can texture 24-bit; texture must be square and power of 2.
3.  The map/texture name is the name you use in FS texture folder, not the Material name.

In FS:
4.  Use 8-bit, 16-bit. DXT1 or DXT3, or 32-bit extended textures in the Texture folder.
5.  All textures must be square.
6.  Textures must be a power of 2 in pixel size.  That is, 256X256, 512X512, 1024X1024, etc.
7. Texture names must agree with the map/texture name added to the Material.

Hope something here helps.

nice plane! but one thing i see you are missing is the prop rod. the prop isn't connected to the plane! but still a great aircraft!

Its looking really nice, Woody!  Glad to see another excellent modeler in the process . . . ;D

I think the textures are, overall, very good.  But they seem a bit blurry.  Try increasing the texture size to 1024x1024.  That will take care of some of the blur.  I think the "Black Heart" below the cockpit is a really nice touch.
