if not are there any freeware progs I can use to develop airplanes for CFS1 and/or FS98 ??

#1 - No - you can use gmax for FS2K2, CFS2, CFS3, and FS9.

#2 - No.  CFS1/FS98 planes were made (mostly) with Abacus' Aircraft Factory 99, which I do not believe is still published.  It may still be available at bargain bins - rarely.  Maybe Abacus still offers it.

ACT Publishing started with AD2000, which had the advantage of being able to model for FS98, CFS1 and FS2000, including animations.  A recent visit to their site, however, does not reference AD2000 anymore.

In a recent post on this forum someone confirmed that Abacus supplied him with a copy of AF99 for around $20. You could always contact them & ask.

You could also look around on Ebay or similar site.

Speaking from experience, AF99 is not particularly user-friendly, in fact entirely the opposite. You would almost certainly need to purchase Aircraft Animator to animate your project.
