The trick to pushing vertices around is making sure you've selected all the ones you want and none of the ones you don't. That's one of the reasons most 3d packages have 4 views, so you can quickly check to see if you've selected the right vertices. I prefer working in one big viewport and use the "L","R","T","B","F","K" keys to quickly change the viewport.
when editing vertices in this case - make sure the "ignore backfacing" box is unchecked. If it's left on, you'll only be selecting the vertices you see on the screen and not the ones on the other side of the fuselage. You'll end up with uneven placement of the vertices.
