Hi all,
nearly every time I work with background images in gmax, I get this prompt: "Background image will take more then X MB (usually 100MB-300MB), do you wish to continue?
the images I work with are no bigger then 70k, and they are all in grey scale. why do I get this prompt, and how do I get rid of it?
Thanks
Liran Bar, Israel
p.s.
Happy Shavo'ot every one!!!!!!! (well every one who is jewish ofcource)

By tossing the idea of using viewport background images and mapping the images to boxes/planes.

Yeah, good Idea Felix

Just make a big box and map it with the picture....
Happy Shavo'ot to you too Liran

Make a four sided plane, map your backdrop image to it.. you move your plane to the correct position. so you can build your model against it... or am I missing something here?

You have missed understood me.... I am not talking about designing the whole plane with the image. I was only talking about the wing, as it is a very twisted and bent abject, so I thought it would be easier to manipulate it with the image in the background... am I wrong?

Whether FSDS or gmax, I'll build the wing with the image in the background. If you have a complex wing - you still have a "flat" background in all views, so you're still building against the background image.
In gmax, by having your scaled backdrop mapped to an object, in this case, the plane, you can move your plane back and forth as needed.
Remember, you would be mapping your backdrop images to at least three planes - top, side, front view....
I've seen modellers that using this method make "jigs" - reference planes at the different cross sections

read the John Mackay tutorial (link at
http://www.freeflightdesign.com Tutorials Section on gmax backdrop image mapping to boxes.
Map your project's top, side and front views to the correctly scaled/sized box or plane, and build your wing with a non-moving "backdrop".
Alternatively - build a nice straight-winged, round bodied, fixed gear Arava, and don't worry about compicated shapes...

OK.... but what's the answer to my question?

LOL......

I was trying once to build the Arava but abandoned it... (was too difficult for a beginner I guess)...
If you want I can show you what came out of it......
But anyway, somebody is already doing a beautiful Arava...
Liran is pretty new with these 3d programs, and he is already building a pretty weird and complicated (most of it) airplane... I don't think he want's me to tell what A/C.......
