lights in GMAX vs. lights in aircraft.cfg?

Two questions..........
I added some directional spots onto the model in GMAX. When I turn on the lights via the aricraft panel's "stock" light switch or the keyboard "L" toggle........ the lights I have added in lines in the cfg file are there and they turn on and off...... but the GMAX added lights do not work. What am I missing here?
second question.............
The aircraft in the simulator is about the size of the state of California ;) ............ obviously I have some scale issues screwed up. Any tips on how to set the scale correctly to start with and also maybe how to fix my gargantuan object?
