You're not alone - but then, gmax is one of those things that some people pick up right away, and others (present company included) have a tough time with.
For some of (us), a much easier alternative is Abacus' Flight Simulator Design Studio Pro Version 2 (FSDS2, for short).
An alternate program is also AD2002 (Aircraft Designer 2002).

gmax is worth paying attention to. Plunging into gMax is (for me) like my plunging into differential equations and calculus in my first year in college - half the class had had it in high school, and I was learning a whole new language. I didn't master it, but I got by.
