Wing Flex with FSX SDK

Postby BrandonF » Thu Dec 24, 2009 5:09 pm

Ok, I have been experimenting for fun today with wing flex. I have only figured out how to make a cylinder rotate about 10 degrees up. But how do I make a nice curved flex rather than just have the wing rotate?

In FSX the best method would be to use a skinned animation...study the use of bones in Gmax. If you don't already have it I highly recommend you get a copy of the "Gmax Bible"

I would like to get it, but it isn't on the list right now. Can you explain a little about skinned animation and using bones?

Thanks and Happy Holidays,

That information is in the TGmx tutorial.  Look in your ProgramFiles/GMax/help/ directory.  There should be two help files.  gmax_t.chm is a great tutorial and has a section on "Rigging a Character"  Start there.  That shows how to skin and animate.

On the other hand, I have a question.  Is there a tag or part name to flex a wing or other parts in FS2004?  I would like to flex and bounce some parts.

I believe that you can do wing flex in 2004. I've seen 2004 aircraft with this. I don't know the tag though.  :'(

Wing Flex in FS2004 is more of a workaround - basically it involves animating linked parts of a wing, according to coded animation.

The best description I've seen of it is in the POSKY "Learning Centre" where Hiroshi describes the POSKY method of FS2004 flexing wings.

There is also a very good description of FS9 "wingflex" along with the required XML scripts for makemdl.parts.xml at FFDS in the "Working XML..." forum...   :D

Amazing stuff you can find at FFDS....  I wonder why the nitwit that runs it doesn't do a better job of organizing it?

Hey Guys, Thanks for the responce regarding the wing flex.

Ok???  I just googled for POSKY "Learning Centre" and it seems it takes me to the Open Sky project, is that the same thing???  and if the flex is for an open sky model, wouldn't the part names or tags be different for Microsofts simulator?  I can make the wings flex in GMax, my question is, how does Flight Sim know to grab what I've animated and flex them?  Also, I found the learning centre fourm but the link to the flex info seems to elude me.
