I lost my truck!

Postby Boeing227 » Sat Dec 23, 2006 8:07 am

After testing my truck file in FS9 that I exported from GMAX, I went back in GMAX and found the file and it wouldn't open anymore (The GMAX file). :'( DO I have to get a MDL converter (Or is there any) that can convert MDLs to GMAX readable files? The truck has no animation yet. But it has textures. Please answer my question!  :'(  :'(  :'(

Normally, to avoid such situation, I would always create a new file of the same model in succession. That way, if one file goes bad, I still have more. It's a sort of back up.

As for how to retrieve the one you already lost, I don't know how to deal with that. Normally, I would just start over. I find it much faster and it's less of a headache that way compared to spending hours trying to figure out how to retrieve a possibly-corrupted file.

Take a look at a folder inside the gmax main folder called "autoback"... rename all files in there by adding the .gmax file extension...
Maybe your truck sill there but can't be completely updated...
Good Luck ;)

The truck file is not in the autoback. I tried renaming the file to see if GMAX will open it, I tried moving it to another destination, but nothing works. See, here's what happens, I go to File - Open - Find the truck's file - Click Open - then this window comes up and says "File Open Failed: C:\Gmax\Scenes\Truck.gmax

Boeing 227,
I have been using Gmx for about 3 years, and it has happened about 3-4 times.I still can't find what causes it.Set your auto save and SAVE...SAVE....SAVE!If you didn't have any Autobak1-2-3...ect...in the Autoback folder,it is not on.Also I assume you went straight to the File (open)and not use the shortcut listing in the rolldown (if the file was name changed or moved (I have done both and forgot)you will get the same error message).I have lost a lot of days work early on till I got in the Habbit of saving,Sorry cain't be more help.As far as I know there is no way to recover it as of now.
Good luck,

Everyone that has ever picked up Gmax has had similar problems, so we've all come up with solutions to keep it from effecting us too much.  I tend to make a folder for each thing I'm working on and then save the file every few times I change it with the suffixes of 01, 02, 03 etc as I go along.  That way, not only do I have a surely working file every time, I also have the ability to revert to an earlier save if the one I'm working on has an insurmountable error in it somewhere.

In a similar vein to above - I created a backup folder on the desktop, and upon saving any changes to a project, always copy & paste the file into that folder. This keeps a clean, untouched version handy in a separate location, in case your original files go corrupt. Also, it's good to make a hard copy on CD or DVD (I always do this at the end of a session, before shutting down the comp.). Sorry as this won't be of any help getting your project restored, but it might help (in addition to everyone's suggestions) in ensuring it doesn't happen again.

At times it is, but don't give it too much of a turn-off, my KFir would never look have as good as it is w/out GMAX ;)
