FSDS V3 Help

Postby Toby » Tue May 09, 2006 9:37 pm

Good Evening,

I am currently experimenting with FS Design Studio v3. I am very new to this. I have only repainted airplanes but have never created them.

Does anyone know how to make textures for a created aircraft. I tried going to file > textures but that made them seem strange and not very good, and also i need some tutorials on animations (nose gear, rotating wheels, rotating turbine engines, doors, landing gear, flaps ect..).

Head on over to the FFDS (Free Flight Design Shop) forums.  FSDS stuff is their bread and butter.

Actually, his questions only appear easy to answer, but can really be extended to practically a full blown tutorial and "how to model" essay.

*I* feel that the FSDS3 tutorials and exercises are pretty much concise and direct explanations, as are the tutorials at FSPlaza, etc. (not surprising as Graham did most of the tutorials).

However, I wonder if this may be a case of wanting to run before being able to walk?

Does Toby understand that required reading for FS9 modelling is in fact the makemdl SDK?

There are stock/default animations, controlled only by the part name and part pivot/axis and the appropriate entry in the aircraft.cfg;  then there are key framed animations, in which the modeller needs to specify the correct part name, in accordance with the SDK, possibly an aircraft.cfg entry and model the animation in the model itself.

FSDS3 exercises show several examples of each of the animations he questions.

THere is more thought neede to answer this question properly.

Yes i do understand that FS9 has the animtions, i just need a little guidance.

I know that FSDS gives you a propeller tutorial of animation, wheels spins, cutting out the flaps and animating them. I was mainly just wondering if there was a website for tutorials instead of the Help manual tutorials. I looked through the tutorial and there is nothing about creating textures, there is a part about Texturing. If there is a part that explains how to make textures i must have missed it or was just in a hurry to learn everything from anxiety instead of taking it slow at first, there for this post would be a waste of time.

Gareenteed i am most likely learning to run before walking, I created my first aircraft with out any animations so i know the modeling part. I have Makemdl ect.. that requires FSDS v3 to make the model ect.. for the aircraft.

Toby - thanks for the explanation, now we have a better idea of "where you are".

As you've seen, at FFDS we have a boatload of tutorials on many subjects.

One of the reasons I questioned myself on the "how to texture" is because I equate "creating the texture" with "making a texture template"

That is, in FSDS you can "create a texture template" which in effect gives you a snapshot of the wireframe, and is saved as a bitmap.

This is then manipulated (the saved bitmap is cropped to size and placed within a larger base image) and it is this larger image that you use to assign the texture via the F4 dialog.

I'll try to post a mini-tutorial on the issue within the next day or so (with work going at home and the "kids" coming to roost for the weekend, things will be hectic).

ok, Thank you Felix. That would be very helpful. I think texturing is the next hardest thing besides animation other wise creating the model is easy. Right now i'm trying to make a Windows which i found at FS Plaza Tutorials!  ;D

Regards,

Toby Turlington  ;)

A texturing tut is what I have been looking for also. I cant find anything on it in the FSDS help files and would love to make the type of textures I have seen in other aircraft  files I have downloaded from this site. A texture template tut would be wonderful.
