Offset viewpoint?

Postby gryshnak » Mon Oct 31, 2005 12:41 pm

I'm looking for a way to move the plane off to one side in Spot mode.  Right now the plane is always in the middle of the screen, unless I make a sudden sharp turn and my viewpoint (chase plane) follows it and catches up again.  I'm trying to set up a particular screenshot, is there some way to shift my viewpoint to somewhere other than the centre of the plane?  I had hoped I could do this by changing the [views] setting in aircraft.cfg but that hasn't worked.  Any other suggestions?  TIA

Yes, there is a way, but it'll make it difficult to fly.

Look for this in the Aircraft.cfg:

[WEIGHT_AND_BALANCE]
reference_datum_position=

The datum position tells FS where the aircraft's center is located.

Put a couple of slashes in front of the entry like so:

//reference_datum_position=

Then make a new entry like:

reference_datum_position=

and change some of the numbers around.  Get it the way you want, take your screenshots, then go back into the Aircraft.cfg and delete the reference_datum_position entry you created and delete the slashes you added to the original one.  Its back to normal!

Sounds like something I need to try! Though I guess you'd have to keep reloading the aircraft.

Thanks, that's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for!

Okay, I tried that and it didn't work  :'(

However, a bit of experimentation revealed [views] a bit further down the .cfg file, this sets the position of the virtual cockpit.  By changing a few numbers there I was able to fly from this vantage point:

If you turn away, you can even lose sight of the plane entirely!  Lots of potential for playing around with screenshots.
