I can safely say that gmax is the most powerful modelling tool for the buck.  It is most definitely NOT a "piece of crap" .

It is a pain in the butt to learn if you're not patient, and cannot visualize in 3D.

If you don't have any 3D modelling experience, and just dabbled with a paint program, it's like learning to fly a glass cockpit King Air, when you've only flown an ultralight.  If you have some 3D modelling experience, then it's more like jumping into a King Air from an analogue instrumented Baron ... ;)

I just started a new job and one of the first things handed to me was a copy of 3dstudio Max 6. The booklet with all the things new in it is about a quarter inch thick. The interface has quite a few changes to it since version 4, which is the version gmax is based on.

Makes me wonder. Will Discreet upgrade Gmax to match the new interface of Max 6? Judging by the small number of games that got on the gmax bandwagon, I doubt it. I suspect we won't see anymore upgrades beyond 1.2 and that FS10 won't be tied to gmax in any way. Having said that I expect something in tomorrow's news will come out that contradicts what I said 100 percent.

Have patience with it. My first 3d program was Animation Master 99, started 2 years ago and it took PATIENCE. Take some time to learn about using it and practice. It took me some time to figure it out too, but it was great to get stuff right in the end.

Places like Simviation and Free Flightsim Design Shop have great tutorials on Gmax. So take your time. ;)
