The exact number is something that is based on the needs of the plane.
You will want to have cross sections in areas where there will be a need to cut into the fuselage for windows or doors. You will also want extra cross sections for areas where you have to deal with curves and want to keep them smooth.
I've included an image from my
Mooney Mite.
The [glb]
yellow[/glb] box shows where there are only a couple of cross sections to maintain shape.
The [glb]
green[/glb] box shows where there are a bunch of closely spaced cross sections to deal with the nose gear well and the cockpit.
The [glb]
red[/glb] box shows where there are a number of cross sections to provide a smooth curve at the nose.

They worked for me.
