OCing an AMD 8350 FX

Hello all. Question for the community:
I just got that new MB and CPU combo going fairly quick, and ran into a problem: I need a water cooler setup for this rig. I was looking at the Corsair H100, but it has been pulled from store shelves to be replaced by the H100i, having some needed user-interface included. However, that now makes the cost of this cooler $130, instead of the $99 I was hoping for. That makes other, formerly more expensive and less-considered options slightly more competitive now.
Is there anybody using this setup, or for that matter anybody, using a water-cooled setup that got them to 5GHz, or at least one that folks are using and would recommend?
I've never used an H2O system before, and was always slightly deterred by the thought of a liquid in your PC case. It just sounds fundamentally flawed. But people are now using them with great success, and I figure I'll not get to 5GHz without one.
Thank you!

You know, I haven't had 1 reply to anything I've said here.
Have I been blacklisted?
Do I smell bad?
Just figured I'd ask...

:-? ::)

It's near the end of the month. Have you washed yet? I guess that it doesn't matter much, you're far enough away.

(I know that you must know this, so you can skip down to the nitty gritty. This is for people who don

I had given up on this thread. Thank you for your reply!

H100i purchased, and will be installed with 2 Coolermaster Turbine Master fans.

Going to try for 5Ghz. I think that my RAM is my choke point. It's Kingston HyperX 1600 (CPU FSB makes it 1800 something) @ 888-20. I think if I loosen up the timings some, it could go further. If anybody is interested, I'll keep updating this thing.

Here goes everything...

I think I need to explain something...

I'm posting this stuff not because I want to brag about it, but to help, and inform.
I am not of exceptional means, and I'm not extraordinarily brilliant. Just determined.
So, if my setup is similar to someone else's, then they, too should be able to do what mine does.

Here's hoping someone else benefits from my effort!

Have my 6300 @ 4.56 on air. Would like to try for 4.7 but will need better mobo. Temps not to bad.

Let me ask you guys something , I understand that you're able to get the OC speed to up around 5Ghz. but what happens when you try to Run a program like FSX at that speed and have you tested that also for how long have you tested that?

Also, I know of AMD chips being far more accepting of an OC than many Intel.
My AMD 965 IIx4 Phenom Black @ 3.4 Ghz. stock was able to OC to 5 Ghz but I was not able to do anything with it even though I was able to run Prime 95 for hours and the temps were around 45C steady with Liquid cooling
If I dropped it down to 4.4 Ghz I was able to Run FSX flawlessly and naturally the temps were also a lot lower around 37 Celsius , so to get a full 1 Ghz out of any chip is pretty damn good .

one night I was curious about all that Water Cooled stuff, and I spent some serious hours on YOU TUBE watching and seeing a lotta Rigs set up for gamers , while impressive and some quite cool, I opted to not get one, I got enough vehicles around that I have to maintence fluids on and worry about leaks.

All I do now is every other month go out a blow the dust out of my $1800.00 unit I use now, easy, simple, effective & KISS ~ !!!

but I do think some of those Chemical cooled computers are neater than mom's home made apple pie tho ! :D

Currently, my specs are in my signature. It's where I run it all the time. Some folks OC to a max for the bragging rights, I suppose, but to me it's useless if it doesn't run there all the time.

I formatted the HD, installed windows 7x64 and updated, overclocked, and the first program I installed was FSX. I used the motherboards own OC utility, and benched with Cinebench, 3dmark 11, firestrike, as many of the benching programs I could find. At 5.19 GHz, it would no longer run FSX, but would do anything else I'd throw at it. Even multiple simultaneous bench programs like furmark and heaven with cinebench. I wanted a thorough test. FSX however was the standard, as it seems to make the PC do more than any of those bench programs did, for whatever reason. FSX could crash it when nothing else could, so I figured if it runs FSX, we're good. I still ran all the other tests through the whole process, but FSX was the determining factor.

I run it all the time like that with a Corsair H100i, and it does fine. It's a closed-loop cooler, and all the connections are press-fit, no clamp. It really can't leak. I was the biggest scaredy-cat with putting a liquid in the PC case (just seems too risky, really). Then I read an article about it, and apparently the liquid used in CPU coolers is generally a non-conductive formula. Whooda thunk it? Cool, I thought.

As with any big scenery package, it still gets busy and starts to drop in FPS. For example, on final approach for FlyTampa VHHX, max FSX settings, Ultimate Traffic 2, REX essentials, and the PMDG MD-11, it never dips below 18 FPS. It depends on the time of day, the weather, what airplane, but it only gets better. Most places I go, it never drops below the target setpoint of 30. I'd say, HONESTLY that's pretty good. That's quite a workload, and not everyone makes their sim that busy. Results can be even better, especially if you start to back off the detail. I am OK with those numbers with the level of detail I get. I got particularly lucky with this combo, and have been enjoying it for over a year now.

It is possible to repeat this exactly, and someone who knows more about what they're really doing than me can probably get better results.

The performance differences between AMD and Intel are narrowing, and this chip is only another step in a positive direction for AMD.

Hope this helps, and see you up there!
