Hi guy`s

About half a year ago I bought a new system:

I7 940 2.93 now clocked at 3.31 Ghz
6 Gb DDR 3   triple channel memory
Nvidia GTX 280
MSI X58 Platinium

Problem is: Some times during startup, only 4 GB of memory is shown in the system opening pic.
Sometimes all 6 GB is shown.

Some times only the original clockspeed is shown 2.93 Ghz
and some times new clock of 3.31 is shown.

And here`s the question:

Do I have a tecnical problem?
Or is just my imagination, that the maschine runs slower, when it only shows 4 GB memory

The 4/6 Gb issue could be the memory or the BIOS or both.  If there is a bad stick it could affect/corrupt the BIOS settings.  It could just be a stick isn't seated properly in the MB socket.  Or it could be an unstable overclock, or it could be a buggy BIOS that isn't displaying the actual clock speeds or memory amount.  So you need to start somewhere.

Check that the hardware is clean and properly installed first.  How familiar are you with the overclock settings in the BIOS?  And are you familiar with the memory and cpu stability programs like memtest86+ and OCCT?  Can you reset the CMOS and load the optimized defaults?

I have heard about these things, but never worked with them.

But your letter made me contact my pc-store, and they would be glad to take a good look at it

G'day Jen, firstly I would like to say welcome!

Secondly, I had a similar problem with my ram as you are describing. I'm running almost identical hardware except for a Asus P6T Deluxe and a clock of 4.16ghz. What I found solved it was pulling out and reseating the RAM sticks. One of them had become loose or dirty and wasn't making contact properly. I cleaned all contacts and ensured all were placed firmly and I haven't had the problem since. This is the most likely problem and would be the first fix I try before looking into the BIOS and OC settings.

Thank you for the tip. 

It has crossed my mind. The problem is that I am a little worried breaking the warranty seal, as it is only about 6 month old.

My local PC-dealer has now promissed me to take a look at it, and find out wether it`s a ram issue or perhaps a motherboard issue, so a solution should be on the way, with a little luck
