Actually, first attempt at any kind of overclocking.

It can't be this easy with the 920, can it?

All I did was go into the BIOS and change these settings:

Ai Overclock Tuner from Auto to Manual
CPU Ratio Setting from Auto to 20
BCLK Frequency from Auto to 200
DRAM Frequency from 1600 to 1603
UCLK Frequency from 3200 to 3208

(The DRAM and UCLK Frequencies went up when the BCLK Frequency was raised. I then reset them to the new values.)

This is on an Asus P6T Deluxe, Core i7 920, Mushkin 7-8-7-20 at 1600. Cooling is a Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 (new model, using fan it came with.) Case is a Coolermaster HAF.

Ran OCCT for 10 minutes to see what the temps were like.

Run OCCT for an hour and make sure its the beta version for bloomfield.. and when summer hits it may not be as forgiving on the temps.. you are in der Canada, Aeh?

As long as the Advanced CPU features are disabled as in Speedstep, CE1, Turbo, HT and the TM fuction the multiplier should remian stable and do remember that RealTemp v2.90 is stil beta so the readouts may be a bit quirky

Jim, you have Intel C-State Technology: Enabled, correct?

Disable it and see if the multiplier remains stable in readout

Typically once Turbo is disable C-State should not have any effect however with all the different BIOS and i7 being new, it could be why you see the change.

Turbo Mode and C-State work together

As long as the processor speed remains a constant I do not see any issue with it fluctuating in the readout

wow... those temps are extremely cool for such a clock..

I have the Antec 900 case and the same HSF as you, and on 3.8ghz it hits 78-79c under load

Yep, I'm in Canada, Eh. My play place is in the basement. Ambient right now is quite cool, probably 17 or 18 C. In the summer, it will get up to 23 or 24, so I'll keep an eye on it when it warms up. But so far, looks like i have a bit of room temp wise.

I did have c-state still enabled. Disabled it as you mentioned in your next post and RealTemp no longer shows the fluctuating multiplier.

I'm in the middle of a 1 hour OCCT (Bloomfield beta) run right now (and not having any problems surfing at the same time.

I always like to get the best I can afford but why go with the 940 if the 920 can hit 4.0ghz this easily for so much less money?

I always hate to read posts by those that "cheap out" and then wonder why it's not OC'ing the way they like but in this case, is there a big difference I am missing?

A 940 will run 4GHz+ easier than 920, and, its memory multipliers are restricted which means memory choices a year+ down the line may be limited

No kidding. Woke up last Friday morning and it was -39. No need to specify C or F as it's only 1 degree away from where they are the same! And this is in a city that can reach over 30C in the summer.

Will be interesting to see how the OC'ing goes in the summer. But then, I don't do much FSX flying in the summer. I prefer to do my other flying hobby. (See link in sig.)

Did another flight this evening. Teeterboro to JFK in my RealAir 260. Smooooth. Should mention that FSX settings are pretty high, even autogen at one notch from the right. Oh, and Nick, remember that comment about AA hitting hard on the TH2go? Not seeing a problem with AA at your suggested 8xS. Looks really nice. Give me a few days and I'll post some FSMark07 benchmarks (for whatever they are worth) and the FSX settings I've settled on.
