I will include screenshots of my Task Manager Processes view.  Please could someone who knows what they are talking about tell me what programs I can/cannot shut down.  It would be much appreciated.  I am running nearly 60 processes and I know this can be cut down a great deal.
Here is my system spec for the computer I am using:
DELL Dimension 8400
Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 3.00GHz (2 CPU's)
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition gfx card

Start, Run, msconfig, startup, shut everything off except what you want on.... I usually run 24-26 processes at boot, 30-35 when I have all my junk going, Though I've had 40 before!

Cheers, Gunny (I hate these computers like ACER, HP, Dell etc, they expect you to have 50-80 processes out of the box at first boot!)

If you don't know what a process does a program that is handy is Process Explorer, because it tells you what the processes are.

Then you can use MSConfig to disable them from starting up.

I would first go through and clean out all the trial software and other crap off the hard drive before shutting down processes.
Shutting them down doesn't mean freeing resources.

Thats one I forgot PI.... With OEMs just uninstall EVERYTHING you don't need. Helps a lot... And the thing cheese suggested works, I use it.

I would start by ridding yourself of that

once you get rid of all that stuff that you don't need or want you will see that list get a lot smaller and it will be easier to sift through what you can disable.

Right, if you want to know what I do every time I go simming, do the following:

Start > Run > Type 'msconfig' without the apostrophes > Select the box 'Selective Start-up' > Uncheck 'Process SYSTEM.INI' and 'Process WIN.INI' and 'Load Startup Items' > Click on the 'Services' tab > Check the 'Hide all Microsoft services box' and then 'Disable all' box > Click on the 'Startup' tab > Find your graphics drivers (for me it is CLIStart) and select them > Apply > Restart

That should free up as many system resources as possible.
Do not go onto the internet in this configuration, all of your antivirus/firewalls have been disabled.

Once you have finished simming, simply bring up msconfig again, and select normal startup.

Apparently people are trying things that are posted in the forums to improve their sim experience. A few are having difficulties with good information for different reasons.

Further, there is the issue of someone reading something elsewhere, trying it and having it work for them and then assuming what they did to their system will work for everyone else and post it.

Cheers for the help Alex.  Tried it, and FSX is running like a beauty.  Fs9......flies, maxxed out, every slider is full.  FSX is mid-high now, with the tweaks i administered.
Great help, and to echo what Alex and Nick N said...please don't try this.  The information works for me but may not for others.  Back up EVERYTHING.  I once failed to do so when modifying something...comp crashed and I lost a lot of info.
Anyway....cheers for all the help, it is appreciated.
