I had help from NickN with my rig.


He explained tweaking is done in 3 major steps:

1. Installing Windows and software, then tweak and maintenance the OS
2. BIOS tweaks to get the hardware installed running at peak performance (never tweak a BIOS before installing Windows and the software)
3. Tweak the simulator with both configuration file edits and replacement add-ons that provide better visuals and performance. (FSX needs no add-ons, FS9 does)

I went through his thread and followed the install instructions and Windows setup. Everything ran great and went off without a hitch. I was still not happy with FSX even though it ran much better after following his instructions. I tried all the FSX texture tweaks and really messed up my sim install. After contacting NickN, he had me reinstall FSX and then set everything up right.

He gave me settings to work with in my BIOS to set up the memory timing correctly and then overclock the CPU/Memory and FSB. I do not know anything about overclocking and he said the settings he gave me were very mild since he did not know what type of CPU fan and heatsink I am using and the limits to the memory stick I had originally installed. He had me purchase memory of a certain brand and type so it could handle the overclock without problems. Most of the performance comes from the memory being clocked up and run at lower latency. Just one of the settings he had me change was the command rate from 2T to 1T and that really made a difference.

After the BIOS was tweaked he provided a list of changes to the FSX configuration file and links to software for overclocking the video card and to make driver tweaks the Nivida driver control panel does not allow.

Once I had all that set up he had me make some fine tune adjustments to the sliders and the FSX configuration file based on what I was seeing on the screen. I have to say, even with my old 7800gs ad a frame lock of 18, FSX looks better and fly

You can't rely on Nick to do this, it wasn't his job, he is just a great guy who doesn't mind helping out others.  Your best bet is to find someone else on tech forums elsewhere or if someone here is generous enough to help you out.  
By the way, if you decide to make any changes, make backups of files so that you can reverse any mess ups.

B.T.W. I have no problem advising whatever I know, and I know a lot! in fact i'm a Engineer in studio working on a apple using Pro Tools, and a expert in producing kid style production(its not easy) if it should know a forum and peaple need help, I will be mr. "nick" out there...

The problem with forums is anyone can post settings but unless you understand what it is you are doing, changing settings can end up making a mess of things. I said I did not understand over clocking. What I meant was, before I had help I did not understand it. I am spending time reading up on it myself so I understand what it is that NickN had me do.

The people here who are into that type of thing spent years working with technology to understand how to go about it. You can not expect someone who may not know the products you run to come into a forum thread and start posting settings. Your hardware appears to be new and the information about it is most likely not going to be found at a Flight Simulator web site.

Before I was a member I came across a thread here that NickN has posted bios settings for someone else. I tried what he posted and my computer would not boot. I managed to get the bios cleared and restarted but the no-boot issue was my own fault because I had never done anything like that before and he was working with a completely different set of hardware. Since he helped me and explained things I have been researching what he did. Even though I now understand more about it, I still have quite a bit of research to do. I see where I can improve even more if I replace my CPU heatsink. There is an entire science around computer tuning and I am just starting to learn it.

Eventually I will get brave enough to experiment further.  

Its not a matter of someone coming into a thread and saying "Change this to this and that to that" Over clocking requires someone who not only know what changes to make on specific hardware but the person at the other end testing for problems and tweaking as they show up. NickN ran though stress tests with me and made changes as I reported the results. There is an entire science to performance tuning a system and it can not be transmitted to someone in a forum thread.

Kidding what he says above is true you need to research. It takes a lot of trial and error.
Caution should always be used when following forum posts. There are very few people that post here that I will take their advice as knowledgeable.
And those are easy to figure out, they are the ones that give you a proper explanation as to what is going on and how it works.

Research and understand before doing anything!
