an overclocked Radeon 9600XT that has been overclocked?
if so could I have the settings?

Also I want to know if one leaves the card overclocked all the time or if one overclocks before starting FS and then "puts it back" after.

I would be grateful to have any info here. For those that haven't got it could you help me if I posted pics of what the current settings are and tell me what I could safely put it up to? AT the moment the settings are really low.

Your card has 2 settings, one for 3d and one for 2d. You overclock the 3d settings as these settings will be used when a 3d app/game needs rendering.

You don't have to 'put it back' because windows and other apps uses 2d only and so, your 2d settings are at stock. The overclocked 3d settings will only be used when an 3d app like fs2004 or any other 3d game is run.

As for what specific settings to run a 9600 XT at, I don't know having never bought one (the 9800 XT was much better at the time).

The "XT" suffix means that the card was the best in it's series....... albeit, it has fast memory and tested GPU for performance clocking, which it already is clocked to.

The best cards for overclocking and performance gains are those that sit below the premium mark, and then are made to perform like their premium cousins.

You may find the card clocks a bit faster, but seriously, that card is older technology and it will never perform anything like it's modern counterparts.

Sell it while it still works (before you fry it!) and get a decent modern card.

I agree But My 9600xt still plays everything Fine Doom111, Chronicles of Ridduck, halflife2 Almost maxed out My skill is software So I have tuned and tweaked But as long as it gets the job Done I fine.

No doubt true sonic, but it would be irresponsible to suggest that overclocking the 9600XT is going to bring about any revolutionary performance benefits, it simply will not.

If the card does overclock well, say in the region of a 10 - 15% performance gain, it is only 15% of a poor speed anyway...... and hardly worth the bother unless there are no alternatives.

6600 gt anyone...

The 6600GT would be a significant upgrade over the 9600XT, but not over an existing 9800XT, where a 6800GT would be a more sensible, albeit more expensive choice. The ATI Radeon 9800XT is still a fairly powerful video card, even by today's standards. So much so, that they were hastily removed from the marketplace, (if anyone noticed the sudden disappearance!), in order to make the newer generation cards look more attractive, and also hide the fact that the new cards, in many cases, do not perform as good as the old 9800XT's do.

I'll also add that the ATI 9800XT was a premium priced card right up to it's untimely demise, suggesting a strong demand for it, supporting my conspiracy theory.

A 6600gt can outbench a 9800 XT anyday. And browsing though newegg, a 9800XT costs about the same. The 9800XT is no longer the premium card it was, not by a long shot. An upgrade from a 9800XT to a 6600gt is a pretty big performence gain. A good example of this is fear and battlefield 2.

I can buy 6600 GT's here in Australia now for 100 British pounds, or $240au.

Hmm $100 for a card eh (basically the exchange rate). For that I would throw a new heatsink on your card and get ATi Tool, or Riva tuner and O/C the crap out of your card. However the core and memory clocks are "locked" so make sure that you get a tool with a bios unlocker. Ithor that or just flash the BIOS to a 9800 or something better.

Typically we pay more here than in the USA, you would be better to get one there, I don't know if it's affected by VAT in UK though.

Ever since I first learned of graphics card prices in the UK, I was thinking how bad you guys are getting ripped off. Kinda sucks.
