hi, as you all know, my pc's been giving me a few probs frame rate wise, but this problem just the mickey. I've tried everything to fix it, but every 5-10 mins the pc just turns off, its the monitor at first, with the CPU still humming away, then that turns off, and the pc restarts itself, its never done it before.

by the way we had a power cut yesterday, (the pc was off but it was plugged in and everything) maybe this has something to do with it?

thanks in advance,
willg :)

Did you build this PC or is it a pre-made?
It could be a number of things :RAM, Video Card, CPU, Motherboard, HDD but I doubt the power outage did anything to it. If you are somewhat comfortable handling components read on if not put her in a box and ssend her to her maker.
Below is the Computer trouble shooting guide for dummies(not saying your a dummy but just inase ;))

1. With the Power Supply UNplugged and your seflf grounded procede to remove the case.

2. Remove any unneeded hardware such as modem, NIC, CDrom, DVD rom, Floppy(not the harddrive yet) and try the computer to see if it works good if not step 3

3. Take out 1 stick of ram and try the computer if it still dosent work try the stick you took out and take out the stick thats in...or you could test the ram in a different computer or try ram in your computer from a different computer. Ram not the problem step 4

4. Remove video card and use integrated video(if you have it) or find an old working video card to test. If you PC is still acting up it will require a trouble shoot of the hard drive, cpu and motherboard wich I doubt you are very equiped to do and scence you only have a restore disk it means you probably got it from a company so send it off and tell them you want a real WinXP disk and not a restore disk also tell them not to charge  you for it... Hope I helped some and Qs ask ;)

I know it's an old virus, but the Sassser Virus did this to my XP computer last year.  (notice the 3 S's. There is a valid system process called Lsass.exe. If I remember correctly the virus comes up as LSASSS.EXE. Do some research on this to be sure.

Assuming its a Windows rather than hardware problem, it sounds to me like you have Automatic Restart on System Failure enabled.
(ARSF)
If your system is configured to (ARSF), you'll never have an opportunity to read the "Blue Screen Of Death" (BSOD) error, if it is such a problem, before the system restarts again. However, you can disable this feature by booting the system into Safe Mode and selecting the

"Disable automatic restart on system failure" item from the Windows Advance Options menu that you see when you start the system in Safe Mode.

You should now be able to read the BSOD and determine the error.

I may be wrong, but is sounds like an alley I've been down myself.....  ::)

It may be the PSU (Power Supply Unit)...if you have a friend that can put hands on hardware, ask him if he can give you his PSU for a try...you (or he) simply need to connect it externally.
Then turn on the computer and check if it keeps on rebooting.

Greetings,

Bob
